Early-career researchers (ECRs) and professionals (ECPs) are invaluable contributors to the aquatic science community in Canada. As the next generation of knowledge producers and users, the contributions of ECRs and ECPs to the peer review of scientific research are essential.

To foster continued involvement of ECRs and ECPs in the peer review process, Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) and the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences (SCAS) have established an Early-Career Reviewer Program.

The Early-Career Reviewer Program aims to provide a collaborative environment where ECRs and ECPs are provided the opportunity to peer review manuscripts submitted to the CSP-SCAS partner journals: Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Canadian Journal of Zoology, Environmental Reviews, and FACETS

As a participant of the Early-Career Reviewer Program you will:

  • Enhance your understanding of peer review standards and processes
  • Develop skills in the reviewing of scientific manuscripts
  • Engage with research and publishing communities via interactive webinars
  • Discover how open science initiatives can support scholarly integrity
  • Advance aquatic science research in a meaningful way
CSP and SCAS will co-host an annual award for an Outstanding Early-Career Reviewer.

Eligibility

This program is open to ECRs and ECPs affiliated with a Canadian institution or organization; while participation in the program does not require membership to SCAS, participants are encouraged to explore the benefits of an SCAS student or early-career membership

The program recognizes ECRs and ECPs as follows:

  • ECRs are PhD students who have completed their candidacy exams and post-doctoral or other academic researchers within 5 years of completion of their terminal graduate degree.
  • ECPs are individuals in the workforce, within 5 years of completion of their terminal graduate degree.
  • We believe diverse perspectives enhance the quality of the reviewer base. As such, exceptions to these definitions (e.g., person with only an M.Sc. but relevant experience) will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by SCAS and CSP.
