Editor's Note: In the spirit of Halloween, we imagined launching the Canadian Journal of Zombie Science. While this unique journal is just for fun and doesn’t actually exist, it showcases real scientific papers that were previously published in the Canadian Science Publishing portfolio of journals.
Scope
Rising from the grave in October 2024, just in time for Halloween, the Canadian Journal of Zombie Science is here to make your academic nightmares a little more entertaining. Read by academics, zombie enthusiasts, and survivors in the field, this spine-tingling journal is dedicated to the scientifically intriguing exploration of “zombie-like” phenomena in the realms of plants, animals, and the environment across the world. After all, zombies have no borders.
We’re here to dig up the weird, the wild, and the wonderfully bizarre! Our journal features an array of research that examines how nature often imitates the undead. Think of it as a quirky blend of science and the macabre—where the line between life and unlife gets delightfully blurry. We’re dedicated to uncovering nature’s darker side, from studies on “zombie” plants that hijack the behaviour of unsuspecting hosts, to critters whose strange behaviours leave you wondering if they’ve been possessed.
Submit a manuscript if your research focuses on plants that seem to have a mind of their own, creeping along like a zombie on a quest for brains, or animals acting like they’ve just stumbled out of a horror film, driven by parasites that turn them into unwitting pawns.
Whether you’re a seasoned researcher with a penchant for the peculiar, or just someone who enjoys a good read about nature’s quirks, the Canadian Journal of Zombie Science invites you to join our undead adventure.
Journal Metrics
Canadian Journal of Zombie Science publishes a variety of manuscript types, from bacteria to plants to brains. For information, please refer to
Author Guidelines.
Peer review roles
In this journal:
- Brains Behind the Operation: Our Editor-in-Chief is the fearless leader, screening original submissions like seasoned zombie hunters, making the tough calls on what rises from the grave to be published.
- Zombie Sidekicks: Our Associate Editors are the trusty sidekicks, managing the peer review process and providing sage recommendations to the Editor-in-Chief. They ensure the quality of our research is as robust as a zombie’s appetite for brains.
- The Horde of Referees: Our referees are a diverse crew, drawn from our Editorial Board Members, our user database, and the wider research community. When submitting your undead ideas, you’ll need to list your preferred referees (the ones you’d love to see in your zombie apocalypse) and non-preferred referees (the ones you’d rather avoid, like a horde of angry zombies). But beware! Our editors are free to choose their own path—whether to follow your suggestions or brave the wilds of the unknown.
- Single-Anonymous Review: We employ a single-anonymous peer review process, where the identities of our reviewers remain shrouded in mystery, much like the secrets of the undead. This way, your work gets the feedback it deserves without any fear of zombie bites.

Cover Image
The cover image features a striking, eerie landscape where nature meets the uncanny. In the foreground, a hauntingly beautiful, bioluminescent plant, reminiscent of a zombie flower, glows in shades of green and purple, symbolizing life emerging from decay. In the background, silhouettes of shambling zombie figures are subtly integrated into the mist, blending seamlessly with the overgrown vegetation. Their vacant eyes reflect a sense of curiosity rather than menace, suggesting a connection to the scientific themes explored within the journal. This cover art not only captures the spirit of Halloween but also embodies the journal’s commitment to exploring the scientific mysteries behind the undead. Image credit: Ursula Undead
